How ONLINE Systemlogistik became the first German groupage network to complete ISO 14083 verification

ONLINE Systemlogistik (OSL) organizes groupage transport with comprehensive coverage across Germany and Europe via a hub-and-spoke system. The network currently comprises 102 national and international partners, all of them mid-sized transport and logistics companies. To record and analyze greenhouse gas emissions across the entire groupage network, OSL uses the Transport Emissions module on pacemaker.ai’s Sustainability Management Platform. On this basis, OSL is, as things currently stand, the first German groupage network to have successfully completed the verification process in accordance with ISO 14083.

A new standard for the entire transport chain

Reliable emission figures are increasingly becoming a business factor for the transport industry, as more and more shippers request CO₂ figures as early as the bidding stage. Since 2023, the benchmark for this has been ISO 14083. The standard replaces DIN EN 16258, applies to multimodal transport chains and includes, in addition to the emissions of all transport modes, those generated during the handling of goods at the hubs.

OSL has been working on these topics systematically for a long time. The groupage network’s environmental management has been certified to DIN EN ISO 14001 since 2002, and since 2014 the calculation of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions has additionally been certified to DIN EN 16258. With the new standard, OSL pursuedtwo goals. Emissions across the entire partner network were to be recorded and analyzed on the basis of real data. At the same time, every partner company was to be able to use the platform for its own emissions measurement and sustainability reporting.

Real data instead of average values

From the outset, OSL placed importance on working with real data rather than with average values alone. To this end, all partners recorded the master data of all their vehicles: vehicle type from van to tractor-trailer, permissible gross weight from 3.5 to 72 metric tons, and the fuel used, from gasoline, diesel and CNG through LNG and Bio-LNG to electricity and renewable electricity.

This data is stored on the platform and covers the entire network. The records comprise all linehaul runs between the 102 partners and the central hub in Schlitz or the regional hubs, as well as all pickup and delivery legs and direct shipments. The energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of the hubs themselves are also included. Since the beginningof 2025, the emissions of all OSL partners and all shipments in the groupage network have been provided and analyzed via the platform. The Transport Emissions modulecalculates them at the shipment level in accordance with GLEC v3 and ISO 14083. The pacemaker.ai team supported the implementation with training sessions and practical guidance.

"When recording emissions at shipment level, it was important to us to work with real data. We developed the solution with pacemaker.ai: we recorded the master data of all vehicles from our more than 102 partners. Recording and analysis take place on this basis. The results are available to all OSL partners."

Verification by an independent auditor

The recording and analysis of emissions created the basis for the verification process in accordance with ISO 14083. The calculation methodology of the Transport Emissionsmodule was audited by TÜV Rheinland. Independently of this, another auditor verified the application of this methodology at ten OSL pilot partners. In October 2025, the auditor checked on site whether the recorded data matched the submitted values, and confirmed full compliance with the requirements of the standard. The verificationstatement followed in April 2026. This sample forms the basis for the verification issued and for its extension to the entire partner network in the coming years. This makes OSL, as things currently stand, the first German groupage network to have successfully completed this process.

Outlook: annual verification as the basis for emission reduction

Since its founding in 1995, the groupage network has relied on high standards in quality and environmental management and also continuously reviews its partners’ performance in internal audits. The ISO 14083 verification process is therefore to be repeated annually. Because the emissions recording is based on regularly updated vehicle and fuel data, all partners have reliable comparative figures at their disposal. On the basis of the annually updated data, OSL intends to define concrete reduction targets together with its partners and to track their progress regularly. In this way, the consumption of fossil fuels and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions across the entire network are set to fall significantly.

“Congratulations to the OSL team on this milestone. They were committed to real data from day one, and we’re glad our Transport Emissions solution could support them through the verification."
